Áo dài

I propose you a small article on the Vietnamese áo dài (pronounced: ao zai) to allow you to know this garment intrinsically linked to the Vietnamese culture and source of inspiration for many artists from all over the world like the French photographer Réhahn.

As I wanted to illustrate in the header picture, the history of the áo dài (long garment or long dress) draws its origins very far in the history of Vietnam.

Personally, I define it as“clothing that loves women”.

Born in the land of modesty

Surrounded by a halo of romanticism, its current form is in fact the result of continuous transformations that have characterized the eventful history of this beautiful country (you will find many specialized sites that will try to tell you the history of this garment…but that is not my goal).

Born in the land of Master Confucius’ modesty, this magnificent garment could not exist apart from the legendary beauty of the Vietnamese woman and the woman herself.

Times are changing

Well, having said that, let’s not get too idealistic. We are now in the 21st century, fast-food and other fast food places are developing rapidly in Vietnam and the size of our beautiful Vietnamese women tends to change rapidly along with their eating habits.

Visiting Vietnam for more than 10 years, I have personally noticed that many Vietnamese girls are more and more exposed to this new way of eating which they consider as an expression of modernity (it is a new experience for all the Vietnamese people).

The myth of the slender Vietnamese woman is collapsing to make way for a new generation of young women with more rounded shapes.

Áo dài: “the garment that loves women”

However, the áo dài remains one of the symbols of the traditional Vietnamese culture, just like the conical hat or the palanche.

It is a garment that makes it possible to go beyond the dictatorship dictated by the criteria of beauty imposed by society and especially by men.

In fact, you will find that áo dài can dress all types of women, from the thinnest to the most generous, young and old (see videos below).

So, let yourself be impregnated by the poetry of this garment for a moment and escape the time of an original and timeless encounter with beauty, femininity and art.

And don’t forget, the most important thing is to have fun and to accept your curves with serenity.
